LUMUT, (Bernama) -- (RMN) plans to have 18 warships in an effort to make the armada competitive to others in the regions, Navy Chief Admiral Tan Sri Abdul Aziz Jaafar said.

He said six warships would be built under the Tenth Malaysia Plan (10MP) while the remaining six would be built under the Eleventh Malaysian Plan (11MP).

RMN had six warships of which five had been commissioned while the other would be commissioned by year end.

Aziz said the government had agreed to build six second generation patrol vessels and four training vessels under 10MP.

"The building of sophisticated assets is to replace seven per cent of old assets that can affect RMN's operation," he told reporters after the commissioning of KD Kelantan at the naval base here Thursday.

KD Kelantan was the third patrol vessel built locally after KD Perak and KD Terengganu
